What is a Tuk Tuk?
These three-wheeled open-aired Made in Thailand vehicles are unique to Thailand. They have their origin in Samlors, 'Sam' meaning three and 'lors' meaning wheels. These human-pedalled vehicles dominated before World War 2.
Later, the addition of Japanese made small engines changed that sector and it continues to live on. The name 'tuk tuk' came from the 'tuk tuk tuk tuk' sound that the engines made. They continue to be made and modified to suit various uses. There are thousands in Bangkok and mainly in tourist areas since they have a unique appeal to tourists. In small towns outside of Bangkok where there are few if any taxis, tuk-tuks are common.
